Our Mission We work with people to reduce CO2 emissions, mitigate the negative impacts of climate change and promote a more sustainable way of living as well as protect the planet’s resources.
Areas of Work GAP Spain is active in the field of education for sustainable development and related programmes for sustainable behaviour change. In addition, GAP Spain implements communicative and practical tools/methodologies, and organises trainings and courses with adults and youth.
Successes Actívate+: GAP programmes run in the Basque Country from 2012 to 2018, supported by the Basque Government & the Provincial Government of Bizkaia, together with 7 other private & public companies. The school programme has involved 99 schools with savings of over 80 tonnes of CO2 and the household on-line platform has engaged over 4,200 households.
Opportunities to collaborate GAP Spain has a history of collaborating with a wide selection of partners, ranging from local government to communities and businesses. The organization offers a wide range of programmes all aimed at encouraging a more sustainable way of living. We have worked with large multinationals (Iberdrola, Eon, HSBC, Petronor, CEPSA, etc), emblematic local institiutions (RENFE, EROSKI, BCH Bank, British Embassy, Caixa Bank, Tecnalia, Provincial Government of Granada, etc), as well as small companies and NGO’s (Fundación Vida Sostenible, Asociación Despierta, Iniciativas Ambientales SL, etc.).
Case studies/Highlights In 2008, GAP Spain launched a CO2 calculator for the energy utility “Iberdrola”. The programme was called “Huella Verde” and was located on their website, where over 13,000 households registered. The programme ran for 12 months and an estimated 5,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions were saved.

In 2011, GAP Spain ran an employee Volunteer program called “Environmental Champions” for the German energy utility E.ON, alongside Hungary & Italy. In Spain, 8 schools and over 500 children participated in three provinces. The results revealed that on average, the schools saved 9% in their energy usage. In 2012, the same programme was used by the national railway bodies “ADIF & RENFE” for their employees, in their central offices located in Madrid.

Since 2014, GAP Spain has been running a programme in the Province of Bizkaia called “Actívate+” with 11 major organizations, both public & private. This programme is based on GAP’s Water Explorer programme. The programme is based on covering the province of Bizkaia over a six year period, with a project based on two GAP programmes: Environmental Champions & Programagap. Local schools adopt an energy and/or waste programme that is run during the academic year. The local community is involved whereby households participate in a web based programme to reduce their environmental impact, firstly by incorporating the parents of the schools involved and then by inviting the rest of the community to participate, using the local municipalities to spearhead the communication.
