Just Action supports primary and secondary school teachers in guiding students in Global Citizenship Education learning experiences in their class, at school, in local communities, through practical activities known as Student’s Journey and a teacher’s guide called Teacher’s Journey.
The objectives
Just Action’s goal is to support primary and secondary school teachers in teaching Global Citizenship Education through a set of free teaching resources to be used with students aged 8 to 15 (to encourage them to action as informed citizens) and an online teacher’s guide to address the challenges of Global Citizenship Education. All resources are free and available on the official website and accessible through a very quick registration.
The GAP team
The Just Action team, composed of four members of the Global Action Plan International network (GAP Ireland, GAP Spain, InEuropa from Italy, and Framtiden i våre hender from Norway), worked closely with teachers to design and implement the resources that are the pillars of the project: the Student’s Journey (one for elementary school, one for secondary school) and the Teacher’s Journey.
The Student’s Journey
The Student’s Journey is a set of teaching activities aimed at pushing students to action in the classroom, at school and in their own community. To make action possible on the three levels for the different themes, the activities have been collected on a map, to be consulted before leaving, just as one does during a trip. All activities are linked to the different school curricula in the project partner countries and to the Sustainable Development Goals, which are increasingly important in lesson planning. In this way, teachers will be able to achieve their teaching goals while addressing important issues such as sustainability and social justice with students.
The materials are available in four different languages (Italian, English, Spanish, and Norwegian): they can also be useful for addressing different topics during foreign language classes, as part of teaching Civic Education.
The Teacher’s Journey
The Teacher’s Journey guides the teacher to better understand Global Citizenship Education with its challenges and potential and explains in more detail Just Action’s action-centred approach to its teaching. It includes content that makes it easier and more dynamic to use (videos, podcasts, infographics), as well as hands-on activities designed to familiarize teachers with the topics covered.
