In the world of environmental advocacy, we often find ourselves drowning in a sea of data. We have the facts, the charts, and the urgency of the climate and biodiversity crises, yet the bridge between “information” and “action” can sometimes feel miles wide. On January 23rd, 16 members of the GAP International network from 12 different countries—stretching from the emerald hills of Ireland to the bustling landscapes of Thailand and Vietnam—gathered online to find that bridge.
The guide for this session was Helen Shaw, an Irish communications strategist and founder of Athena Media. Organized by the GAP Visibility Working Group, the workshop explored why narratives are the vital “connective tissue” needed to communicate complex issues like biodiversity and climate change.
Helen introduced the participants to a world where stories aren’t just fluff—they are the vital tissue that holds advocacy together. The core of the session focused on three pillars:
- Understanding the Message: What is the fundamental truth we are trying to share?
- Understanding the Audience: Who is listening, and what do they care about?
- The Internal Narrative: How do our teams align on the story we tell ourselves before we speak to the world?
For our GAPI members, these aren’t just communication tips; they are essential tools for inspiring behavior change and amplifying environmental impact.
With representatives from Ireland, Italy, Poland, Turkey, South Sudan, Spain, Hungary, Ukraine, Germany, and The Netherlands, the diversity of the group highlighted a shared truth: while our local environmental challenges differ, the need for a compelling human story is universal.
Despite the strong appreciation for the content, the format presented some practical limitations. While the relevance of the content was rated exceptionally high (4.29 out of 5), the participants were candid about the challenges of a digital workshop. “The theory is beautiful,” the feedback suggested, “but now we want to get our hands dirty.”
The Next Chapter: From Theory to Practice
The story doesn’t end here. With an 86% interest rate in a follow-up online course, the mandate from the network is clear. The January workshop was the spark; the next step is the flame.
GAP International can now look toward a “Digital Storytelling Lab”—a space where the GAPI members can move from the “Why” to the “How.” The goal? To move away from the lecture hall and into the workshop, where stories are drafted, critiqued, and polished until they are ready to change the world.
The data is ready. The science is clear. Now, thanks to the insights from January 23rd, the story is finally beginning to be told.
