Deep Dive Session on Chemicals Inspires Action

On Tuesday, 24 February, GAP-I members came together online for a Deep Dive session on chemicals in the household, facilitated by the Baltic Environmental Forum (BEF).

During the session we learned that chemicals are everywhere in our daily lives. This can have negative effects on both our health and the planet. An important message from the session was that we should not wait for regulation or government to act, we can already take steps ourselves.

Some simple and effective actions include:

  • Air your home or office every day
  • Dust regularly
  • Avoid heating food in plastic; use glass containers instead
  • Choose organic food when possible
  • Lower the temperature in your home or office; try to keep it under 22°C

The session started with some worrying facts about the impact of chemicals. However, this also motivated participants to take action. The practical tips at the end were very well received, and some partners already use these actions in their daily lives.

We also reflected on good ways to talk about this topic. BEF found that it works well to start with a DIY activity first. After making a product themselves, participants learn more about chemicals and the benefits of the homemade alternative. This positive approach helps people feel that they are already making a difference.

All participants left the Deep Dive feeling energised, informed and inspired.
